Know Before You Go: Hostellerie de Levernois (Burgundy, France)

Tucked amid the vineyards and quiet countryside just outside Beaune, Hostellerie de Levernois is the kind of place that captures the essence of Burgundy — refined yet relaxed, elegant yet deeply connected to the land. The manicured gardens, shaded paths, and tranquil streams create an atmosphere that feels both secluded and timeless, but is also family-friendly. Days unfolded at an easy pace — touring nearby wine villages, lingering over leisurely swims at the outdoor pool and Sisley Spa wellness facilities (which we occasionally had all to ourselves), and exploring the estate’s gardens. The dining program was a true highlight. While dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant was memorable and meals at the bistrot were delicious, both venues were fully booked during our stay and service was somewhat frenetic most nights. The breakfasts, however, were among the best we’ve ever had at a hotel — between the beautifully curated buffet of cold items and well-executed made-to-order farm-fresh egg dishes, along with a more peaceful scene and pace than at lunches and dinners. Overall, Hostellerie de Levernois offered the perfect blend of wellness, gastronomy, tranquility, and proximity to storied wine villages — a quintessential Burgundy escape that felt both indulgent and restorative. We would love to return, next time in off-season and with the kids.

Overview

At-a-Glance

  • Date of stay: August 2025

  • Length of stay: 4 nights / 5 days

  • Trip type: Couples trip while exploring France and Switzerland

  • Property type: Luxury family-friendly estate in wine country

  • Tailor-made for: Wine enthusiasts, couples, but also especially family-friendly

Highlights

  • Over seventeen acres of beautiful, impeccably manicured grounds with walking paths, gardens, fountains, and an organic kitchen garden — lots of places to sit and enjoy a drink while enjoying the park

  • Dining here was excellent, including dinner at Table de Levernois, gourmet restaurant awarded 1 Michelin star, as well as casual lunches and dinners at the Bistrot du Bord de l’Eau (outdoor dining with rustic, buzzy, local feel)

  • Breakfasts here were among the best we have ever had with hot dishes made to order — including farm-fresh egg dishes cooked to perfection — and a well-curated continental buffet — including local produce, fresh juices and a DIY orange juice press, house-made pastries, local cheeses and charcuterie, and Bordier Yogurt from Brittany

  • Extensive wine cellar (~1,000 bottles) with producers and vintages that are difficult to find outside the region, offered at significantly lower prices than global market value; the wine lists here and at other restaurants in the region attract wine collectors and enthusiasts from across the world

  • Beautiful, modern Sisley Spa (opened 2024) with tranquil indoor pool and cabanas, small outdoor pool surrounded by trees and the park; hotel guests can access the wellness facilities on a complimentary basis without a booking

  • We stayed in a Pavilion Room (15) on the ground floor of the newer Villa complex adjacent to the outdoor pool, beautifully appointed and opening onto a private patio overlooking the park

  • The large outdoor pool was the center of activity at the hotel during the days

  • Attentive and personal service —staff were engaging, warm, and detail-oriented; we also enjoyed thoughtful, generous service touches like complimentary soft drinks, juices, and snacks in the minibar and a hotel-branded cloth tote bag for guests to use at the pool/spa and take home

  • Visit to Beaune with lunch at Le restaurant Caves Madeleine and wine cave tour and tasting at Oenothèque Joseph Drouhin (our tour was in English; advance reservations required)

  • Visit to Puligny-Montrachet with Lunch at Le-Montrachet Restaurant (part of COMO Le Montrachet)

Good to Know

  • Closest international airport is Geneva (GVA), about ~2-2.5h drive from the hotel

  • The ambience here is elegant and upscale, but the property is stroller accessible, has plenty of family-friendly touches (pools, kids menus and activities at the bistrot), and there were several families with children of all ages staying here during our visit

  • Dining reservations are a must for lunches and dinners in Burgundy, including at the hotel, during this time of year

  • Cycling is big in Burgundy; the hotel offers bike and e-bike rentals

  • The accommodations are spread across multiple buildings throughout the park; best accommodations for families are the spacious 2-story, 2BR Villa apartments featuring a sprawling private patio overlooking the pool, kitchenette, and a lounge area with fireplace

  • Not much to do in Levernois town itself so plan to take most meals at the hotel unless you want to drive to other towns

  • Winery tours are largely restricted to industry professionals; however, Levernois can arrange wine cave tours and tastings with select proprietors

  • Many of the famous Burgundy wine villages were like ghost towns when we visited — very different experience than our trips to other European wine regions (Provence, Champagne, Bordeaux, Alsace, Piedmont, Tuscany, Rioja)

  • Visiting Burgundy is a sort of pilgrimage for high-end wine collectors around the world — some of the international guests (including Americans) at the property and at meals put a slight damper on our experience given their unusually loud/rude behavior, which clearly put strain on the hotel staff and other guests, though this may not be as much of an issue in the off-season
