Know Before You Go: Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Resorts (Santa Fe, New Mexico)

To celebrate a milestone event, we booked a one-night getaway in Santa Fe. This was our second trip to Santa Fe but our first time staying at Bishop’s Lodge, an Auberge Resort. Located just outside downtown Santa Fe on 300 acres spanning the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the stunning natural setting and majestic hiking trails surrounding the lodge had a distinctly retreat-like feel. Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed with an adobe fireplace and private terrace. We particularly enjoyed the dinner and breakfast here, along with the thoughtful service touches and generous celebration amenities. One night here was enough to tempt us to return, but for longer next time.

Overview

At-a-Glance

  • Date of stay: May 2024

  • Length of stay: 1 nights / 2 days

  • Trip type: Adults getaway / celebration trip

  • Property type: Family-friendly desert lodge just outside Santa Fe

  • Tailor-made for: Couples, events, but also especially family-friendly

Highlights

  • Extensive hiking and horseback riding trail system in the woods adjacent to the lodge

  • Spacious Resort View King room with indoor and outdoor adobe fireplaces and private terrace overlooking the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

  • Delicious dinner (the braided churro and ice cream was a memorable indulgence) and generous celebratory amenities compliments of the hotel

  • Family-friendly property with kids menus, all ages pool and stables and donkeys onsite — while the kids weren’t with us on this trip, they would have loved these features

  • Daily resort programming catering to a wide array of interests and guest ages — trail hikes (including some that are kid-friendly), meditation, yoga, tamale crafting, postcard making, wine tasting, archery, creative expression, and more

  • Warm and attentive service — similar to the levels and details we experienced at The Lodge at Blue Sky and The Madeline Hotel & Residences, two of our favorite Auberge Resorts

Good to Know

  • We booked direct with the hotel then transferred the booking to a travel agent, tacking on value-added benefits that saved us money and created a lovely celebration experience (check out our Travel Club for more details on how to do this for your hotel bookings)

  • Plan ahead for the elevation — at 7,000 feet we made sure to drink plenty of water before arriving to adapt to the elevation; the resort also provided a welcome drink on arrival with chlorophyll to help with elevation and hydration

  • Some resort activities require advance registration — check with the concierge ahead of arrival about upcoming programming

  • This is a popular place for weddings and events; check with the hotel in advance about arranging accommodations away from the main events venue if you have noise concerns, especially if staying over a weekend
